2009 Distinguished Scholars Series — (January 5-9, 2009)
For the Glory of God: A Biblical Theology of Worship
An examination of worship in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, with a view to developing a theology of worship that is consistent with the teachings of Scripture and applicable for the church in our own time.

Dr. Daniel I. Block | Our guest lecturer for TMS Winterim 2009 is Daniel I. Block (D.Phil., University of Liverpool), the Gunther H. Knoedler Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton Graduate School. Dr. Block is a widely respected and published Old Testament scholar with several important books and more than 40 scholarly articles and essays to his credit. His commentaries on Ezekiel (two volumes in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament), and Judges/Ruth (in the New American Commentary series) have established Dr. Block as a leading evangelical interpreter of the OT. Accordingly, many are eagerly anticipating his forthcoming volume (2009) on Deuteronomy, to be followed by a book on this year’s winterim topic, the theology of Christian worship. |
Course Objectives:
- To learn the meaning of worship as a form of religious expression.
- To gain an understanding of the biblical history of worship as an expression of religious faith in ancient Israel and the New Testament church.
- To gain an appreciation for the forms of biblical worship, both public and private, in the light of the broader cultural environment in which Israel and the Church found themselves.
- To comprehend the theological foundations upon which worship was based in Old and New Testament times.
- To develop an understanding of and a commitment to worship that brings glory to God and transformation to the subject.
- To develop a long-range strategy for implementing a biblical theology of worship in one’s own ministry.
The Winterim series is open to all TMS students, and, as always, TMS alumni may take advantage of this exciting opportunity tuition-free. Contact Dana Hilborn at the seminary (dhilborn@tms.edu, or 818-909-5642) for more information.
Since 1990 The Master's Seminary has offered a special course in the "winterim"
period between the Fall and Spring semesters. Entitled the Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series, the seminary
invites outstanding evangelical scholars from the areas of New Testament, Old Testament, Theology, and Bible Exposition
to lecture on specialized topics in their area of expertise. The classes are open to current students and alumni and offer
two units of academic credit.
